Hi Everyone,

I’m doing a zoom demo this Wednesday under the auspices of the California Watercolor Association (CWA), and I wanted to invite folks to come. The meeting goes from 700-900 PM Pacific Standard Time and is free. It’ll be set up in a paint along format, which has been fun and worked well in previous demos. It’s a barn again— I don’t know why!! LOL. Only later did I remember that I did a barn last time too. Hahahaha. It’ll be fun though. It’s a good composition to learn with. :) And it’s really pretty green, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

In anticipation of my online workshop through the CWA April 16-18, we’ll not only be painting the scene but exploring some initial elements of composition and notan. Follow this link for more info on the workshop. As such, I have a couple of comparative photos for us to check out as we alter things, we’ll be making a live notan together, and we’ll be using a very limited palette (just Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow, and Burnt Sienna!). These are all very useful tools and are methods worth, at the very least, exploring. It’s also a nice introduction to some of what we’ll be doing on Day 1 of the workshop.

For the notan, my advice is to not use a pencil or pen, but instead something that can get fatter— a sharpened piece of charcoal, conte, or maybe a crayon? I’ll be using a Pentel brush pen, which allows fat shapes but also a bit of fine line work. The goal is to think in shapes, not outlines. I’ll also be using a tool to paint with white— a small brush and a tube of white works well, but other white tools should do fine. This will be to let us go back in and pull out highlights as we figure out the best composition.

Here’s the zoom info-
